Barahona school security backpack mandate
Overview
The Instituto Tecnológico Federico Henríquez y Carvajal in Barahona announced a mandate requiring students to use transparent backpacks for the upcoming school year. Director Deicy Alejandrina Mesa Espinosa stated the measure aims to “enhance security and prevent violence” following previous discoveries of knives, stun guns, pepper spray, and alcohol during random searches.
By the start of the 2026-2027 school year, the Ministry of Education officially launched the term in the Regional 01 Education district, which includes Barahona. The transparent backpack requirement was introduced as a formal security measure during opening ceremonies attended by civil authorities and the National Police.
