Jordi Aragonès named Aliança Catalana’s Barcelona mayoral candidate

Aliança Catalana announced on 19 June 2026 that historian and party ideologue Jordi Aragonès will lead its list for the 2027 Barcelona municipal elections. The presentation took place at the Centre Cultural del Born, where party leader Silvia Orriols highlighted Aragonès’s “passion for history” and framed the campaign around a “Salvem Barcelona” slogan.

Aragonès, 33, is a cousin of former Catalan president Pere Aragonès and has a background in Unió Democràtica and the Moviment Demòcrata Català. He has never held elected office but serves as the party’s secretary of Studies and Finance. The party, described as far‑right and xenophobic, vows to tackle what it calls an “immigration‑driven” housing and security crisis, proposing stricter control of the municipal register, reduced subsidies for migrant‑run businesses, and the creation of a sovereign city fund to promote Catalan identity.

The candidacy follows weeks of uncertainty after an earlier prospective nominee withdrew in April. Aliança Catalana, which gained parliamentary representation in 2024, remains a minor force with only a few hundred members in Barcelona, but hopes the high‑profile mayoral race will expand its footprint in the capital.
