Barcelona government rejects immediate eviction of Plaza Catalunya encampment

The Barcelona City Council, led by Mayor Jaume Collboni, has declined a proposal from the People's Party (PP) to immediately evict the housing protest encampment in Plaza Catalunya. Deputy Mayor for Security, Albert Batlle, described an immediate removal as “irresponsible,” though he noted that municipal services, including the Guàrdia Urbana, are prepared to act if necessary to restore the square's habitual use.

The decision follows a recent electricity cut in part of the encampment, which authorities implemented after firefighters warned of “imminent risk” due to irregular electrical connections. While the council maintains that the encampment is being managed to ensure safety and cleanliness, the PP has criticized the government for allowing the occupation of public space.

In a related development, the City Council has agreed to act as a private prosecutor to seek damages from individuals responsible for vandalism during recent housing protests and independence demonstrations. This includes seeking compensation for the destruction of urban furniture and the burning of containers, with initial damage estimates exceeding 42,000 euros.
