Civil unrest and protests in Barcelona

Overview

Barcelona has experienced a period of social tension involving housing encampments and public demonstrations. The City Council recently rejected proposals for the immediate eviction of a housing protest encampment in Plaza Catalunya, with officials labeling an immediate removal as “irresponsible.” This decision followed safety concerns regarding irregular electrical connections at the site.

Concurrently, the city has faced violent unrest linked to social movements. Recent disturbances resulted in 130 arrests and damage to roughly 30 commercial establishments. In response to further alerts for unauthorized demonstrations, police forces including the Mossos d'Esquadra and Guàrdia Urbana deployed significant security presence around Plaça Espanya to prevent looting and potential violence.
