Barcelona housing protest turns violent with arrests and police injuries

A large-scale housing protest in Barcelona escalated into violent clashes between demonstrators and police on Monday night. The mobilization, organized by groups such as Sindicat de Llogateres, aimed to protest rising rents and property speculation. While organizers estimated attendance at 120,000 people, the Guardia Urbana reported approximately 20,000 participants.

Following the official end of the march, groups of masked individuals engaged in confrontations with the Mossos d'Esquadra, particularly in the areas of Plaça Catalunya, La Rambla, and Passeig de Gràcia. Protesters erected 28 barricades and set fire to at least 22 containers. Demonstrators reportedly used construction materials from nearby worksites on La Rambla to throw at police lines. In response, authorities used foam projectiles and baton charges to disperse the crowds.

The clashes resulted in the arrest of 13 people, including one minor, for public disorder. Additionally, 28 police officers sustained minor injuries during the unrest. The disturbances caused damage to several police vehicles and commercial storefronts.
