Barcelona mobile phone theft investigations
Overview
The Mossos d’Esquadra conducted two separate investigations in Barcelona targeting criminal networks involved in the theft and redistribution of mobile devices.
One operation in the Ciutat Vella area utilized geolocation data from victims to identify three properties linked to over 70 cases. This resulted in 13 arrests and the seizure of more than 140 mobile phones, nine laptops, two tablets, and approximately 3,500 euros. Suspects face charges including fraud, receiving stolen goods, and the discovery and revelation of secrets.
A second investigation focused on a network that purchased and manipulated stolen phones, leading to four arrests and the recovery of 120 mobile phones, six laptops, four tablets, and 20,000 euros. These actions are part of the ‘Kanpai’ plan, a strategy designed to dismantle networks facilitating the sale of stolen electronics and to combat recidivism.
In a subsequent development, Mossos d’Esquadra carried out further investigations into criminal networks specializing in the resale of illicit devices. These operations led to the arrest of 18 individuals and the recovery of more than 260 stolen mobile phones.
