Barcelona ramps up transport for Tour de France Grand Départ

Barcelona will host the Grand Départ of the Tour de France from 2 to 6 July, marking the race’s first start in the city. Officials expect up to 850 000 spectators, with 70‑80 000 at the team presentation on 2 July, about 600 000 along the first stage on 4 July and roughly 170 000 for the second stage on 5 July.

To manage the influx, the city will increase metro capacity by up to 40 % on key lines, add up to 30‑34 % more trains during peak periods, and reroute or suspend dozens of bus routes. Around 900 urban police officers, additional cleaning crews, extra signage and temporary bicycle parking will support security and crowd control. Residents are urged to use public transport and avoid affected streets, especially in the Eixample, Sants‑Montjuïc and Sant Martí districts.

The event will be broadcast in over 190 countries, reaching an audience of millions, and is described by the sport’s mayor as the most significant logistical undertaking for Barcelona since the 1992 Olympics.
