Tour de France 2026: Pogacar leads, Philipsen sprint win
Overview
Stage 17 (22 July) saw Jasper Philipsen claim his first 2026 Tour sprint, a 174.7‑km run from Chambéry to Voiron, thanks to a perfect lead‑out by Mathieu van der Poel. The win narrowed his points deficit to green‑jersey holder Mads Pedersen to seven points. Overall leader Tadej Pogacar rode safely in the peloton and kept the yellow jersey with a 4 min 32 s advantage over Remco Evenepoel; the GC contenders escaped injury despite several crashes.
The race now heads into the high Alpine phase. Stage 20 (25 July) will cover 170.9 km from Le Bourg‑d’Oisans to Alpe d’Huez, featuring four major climbs—including the Col du Galibier and the new Col de Sarenne—making it the toughest day of the edition and a decisive moment for the overall standings. Pogacar remains the favourite, with Isaac Del Toro, Paul Seixas, Evenepoel and Richard Carapaz also in contention.
Classification leaders remain Tadej Pogacar on GC, with Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel completing the podium, Mads Pedersen retaining the points jersey, and Juan Ayuso leading the youth classification.
