Barcelona to receive at least €2 million from FIFA after De Jong’s World Cup injury

Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong suffered a serious injury while representing the Netherlands against Morocco in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Medical reports indicate the damage may require surgery and could keep him out for four to six months.

Under FIFA’s Club Protection Programme, Barcelona is entitled to financial compensation for the loss of a player for more than 28 consecutive days. The scheme can pay up to €7.5 million per player, calculated at a daily rate of about €20,548 based on the player’s base salary and social‑security costs, excluding bonuses. Initial estimates suggest Barcelona will receive at least €2 million if De Jong’s absence lasts the projected four‑to‑six months, with payments continuing until he returns to full training.
