Frenkie de Jong injury and FIFA compensation
Entities: Marc Casadó · Frenkie de Jong · Hansi Flick · Pedri · FC Barcelona
Overview
Barcelona confirmed on 22 July 2026 that Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong suffered a complete tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee during the World Cup. The club chose a conservative, non‑surgical rehabilitation programme, monitoring progress weekly and leaving surgery as a later option. De Jong will miss the La Liga opener on 23 August and is likely to be unavailable for much of the 2026‑27 season.
Barcelona invoked FIFA’s Club Protection Programme, which can award up to €2.4 million if the player remains sidelined beyond 28 days, capping compensation at €7.5 million per player. The potential payout is a modest supplement to de Jong’s €18 million annual salary.
On 25 July the club reiterated that the injury will not alter its transfer strategy. Manager Hansi Flick said existing midfield options – Pedri, Gavi, Marc Bernal and academy prospects – together with scouting targets such as Rodri should cover the void.
Two days later, medical staff indicated that surgery may become necessary, with a projected recovery of five to six months. Flick reshuffled the midfield, rotating Pedri, Gavi, Bernal, Eric Garcia, Pablo Olmo and academy graduate Marc Casadó, who has featured prominently in a new double‑pivot. Casadó is now being linked as a potential signing, valued around €30 million, with interest from Premier League and Saudi clubs. Despite the setback, the sporting director remains confident in the squad’s depth and youth pipeline.
Legal claims against the Dutch federation continue as Barcelona seeks reimbursement for the injury sustained on international duty, while the club monitors de Jong’s rehabilitation closely.
