Bari advances Bus Rapid Transit Green Line infrastructure
Infrastructure works are progressing for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Bari, specifically focusing on the Green Line. This line is the most extensive of the four planned routes, spanning over ten kilometers and connecting via Aquilino in Japigia to via Di Maratona near the Fiera del Levante. The route will link major hubs including the Policlinico and the university campus.
In via Omodeo, crews are implementing horizontal signaling, including yellow stripes and road studs, to designate preferential lanes for electric buses. These lanes are designed to prevent private vehicle encroachment while remaining accessible for emergency services. Similar work is underway at Largo Due Giugno, where two dedicated lanes will be created using red asphalt.
The BRT system aims to separate public transport from private traffic for at least 70% of its routes, utilizing intelligent traffic lights and automated control cameras to ensure regularity. While physical markings are being installed, the new lanes will not become active until the service undergoes testing and the camera monitoring system is activated.
