Bari public transport improvements and BRT debates

Overview

In late July 2026, the Municipality of Bari re‑activated the €20 MUVTinBUS365 annual public‑transport pass, subsidising a ticket worth €250 for residents, students and seniors. The €230 subsidy is funded by the city’s POC Metro 2014‑2020 programme. Applications for the pass remain open until 30 September 2026. Simultaneously, construction for the city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line Lilla expanded, with works on Via Cognetti, Corso Cavour, and Via De Giosa. Throughout August, construction continued on Viale Unità d'Italia and Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII. Local officials have debated the BRT model, with counselor Onofrio De Giglio cautioning against applying standardized models to areas like Corso Benedetto Croce. To mitigate parking shortages, Municipality 2 is expanding regulated zones and converting unused land near the Santa Scolastica market into parking facilities. By early September, the project faced scrutiny over economic sustainability. Following a Service Quality Commission hearing, Amatb administrator Luca D'Amore indicated that operating the BRT would require hiring approximately 103 new staff members, with estimated annual costs of at least 5 million euros, excluding maintenance, energy, and security. Members of the Fratelli d'Italia party have filed an urgent inquiry regarding these costs, as the certainty of regional financing remains unconfirmed. By early October, infrastructure works for the BRT Green Line—the system’s most extensive route, spanning over ten kilometers—have progressed. The line connects Japigia to Via Di Maratona, linking hubs such as the Policlinico, the university campus, and Fiera del Levante. In via Omodeo, crews are installing horizontal signaling, such as yellow stripes and road studs, to designate preferential lanes for electric buses. At Largo Due Giugno, dedicated lanes are being marked with red asphalt. The system aims to separate public transport from private traffic for at least 70% of its routes using intelligent traffic lights and automated cameras.
