Italy advances Bus Rapid Transit projects in Rome and Bari
Major urban mobility projects are advancing in Italy, specifically focusing on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems in Rome and Bari.
In Rome, planning has begun for two new high-capacity electric bus lines: Ostia-EUR and Battistini-Casalotti. The Ostia-EUR line aims to provide a fast alternative to private cars along the Cristoforo Colombo axis, with a projected capacity of up to 4,000 passengers per hour and 5-minute frequencies during peak times. The Battistini-Casalotti line will cover approximately 5 kilometers, with 80% of the route on protected lanes, offering a 16-minute travel time. Funding for these projects includes 500,000 euros from Roma Capitale and 400,000 euros from the Lazio Region.
In Bari, construction continues on the BRT network throughout August. Works are currently active on Viale Unità d'Italia and Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII. These developments include the installation of dedicated signaling for cyclists at BRT intersections and the cabling of new transit stops to integrate technological equipment into the public transport system.
