Bari councilors question sustainability of Bus Rapid Transit

In Bari, members of the Fratelli d'Italia party have filed an urgent inquiry regarding the economic and operational sustainability of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The inquiry follows information presented during a Service Quality Commission hearing.

According to Amatb administrator Luca D'Amore, operating the BRT would require hiring approximately 103 new staff members, with an estimated annual cost of at least 5 million euros. Additional expenses include energy, vehicle maintenance, battery replacement, station and lane upkeep, technological systems, insurance, cleaning, and security.

Opposition councilors are seeking clarity on how these costs will be covered, noting that while the mayor suggested using regional funds intended for local public transport, the extent and certainty of such financing remain unconfirmed.
