Bark beetle monitoring continues in Bavaria amid new satellite detection technology

In Bavaria, the fight against bark beetles continues as the second generation of the insect has largely completed its development. In lower to middle elevations, some beetles have already flown, and warm temperatures may allow for further breeding. Forest owners are advised to continue searching for fresh wood dust and to monitor older infestation sites, as heatwaves may have pushed infestations deeper into forest stands.

To aid in forest protection, researchers from the University of Utah have developed a satellite-based method to detect impending bark beetle infestations up to two years in advance. The technique monitors chlorophyll fluorescence, a faint red glow emitted by plants during photosynthesis. When trees experience stress from beetles, their photosynthetic efficiency decreases, weakening this signal. This early detection allows for preventative measures before widespread tree death occurs.
