Bark beetle infestation and monitoring in Bavarian forests

Overview

Bavarian forests have experienced a significant decline in bark beetle damage. Statistics from the Bavarian State Institute for Forestry, Agriculture and Forestry indicate that damaged wood volumes in 2025 decreased by more than 50% compared to 2024. While the number of caught beetles dropped by approximately one-third, the regional focus of the infestation has shifted from Northern Bavaria and Franconia toward the south, with Upper Bavaria emerging as a major center of activity.

In the Bavarian Forest region, officials reported historically low levels of beetle-damaged wood. During a site visit in Spiegelau, representatives from the Bavarian State Forests, the National Park administration, and private forest owners noted that in the National Park, damaged wood fell to approximately 4,000 cubic meters from a 2023 record of 140,000 cubic meters. The Bavarian State Forests also reported a decrease from nearly 1.4 million cubic meters in 2024 to approximately 164,000 cubic meters in 2026.

To support forest owners, the Bavarian state government has more than doubled financial subsidies, providing up to 12 euros per cubic meter to protect larch, fir, pine, and oak trees. This follows advocacy by the Bavarian Farmers' Association (BBV) in response to extreme weather and droughts.

As the second generation of insects completes development, authorities warn that warm temperatures may allow for further breeding. Forest owners are advised to monitor older infestation sites for fresh wood dust, as heatwaves may have pushed infestations deeper into forest stands. Additionally, new satellite-based technology from the University of Utah offers a potential preventative tool by monitoring chlorophyll fluorescence to detect tree stress up to two years in advance.
