BARMM begins coalition-building after first elected Parliament proclaimed
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has entered a new phase of political transition following the proclamation of its first elected Parliament. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) confirmed the results of the September 14 parliamentary elections, marking a shift from the appointed Bangsamoro Transition Authority to an 80-member legislature. The new Parliament is scheduled to assume office on October 30, 2026.
The election resulted in a hung Parliament, necessitating intensive coalition-building to elect a chief minister. The Bangsamoro Federalist Party (BFP) secured 31 seats, followed closely by the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) with 30 seats, and the BARMM Grand Coalition (BGC) with 15 seats.
While many polling areas experienced calm and orderly voting, observers noted some irregularities and incidents of violence, including gunfire in Cotabato City that resulted in one death and three injuries. Despite these challenges, the European Union and other international observers characterized the vote as a key step in the region's peace process and pledged continued support for the political transition.
