BARMM holds first parliamentary elections amid violence and security concerns
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) held its first-ever parliamentary elections on September 14, 2026. The United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) secured 30 of the 80 available seats. In Lanao del Sur, political allies of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Grand Coalition (BGC) won six of the nine district seats.
The electoral process was marked by significant security concerns and violence. Parliament member Mohagher M. Iqbal reported the deaths of three UBJP volunteers and injuries to approximately 20 others, calling for a thorough investigation into the bloodshed. Additionally, local observers from Katungod Bangsamoro raised concerns that a highly militarized environment, involving nearly 12,000 deployed soldiers, could create a “climate of fear” and lead to voter disenfranchisement.
Despite these challenges, the British Chamber of Commerce Philippines (BCCP) noted that the successful conduct of the polls could bolster investor confidence. Regional investment had already reached ₱5.1 billion as of April 2026, with potential growth expected in agribusiness, renewable energy, and infrastructure.
