West Bengal chief minister responds to Baruipur mob lynching
On July 5, 2024, 26‑year‑old Indrajit Tanti (also reported as Indrajit Mondal) was killed by a mob in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district, after a 12‑year‑old girl was found raped and murdered. Police say the youth had been declared innocent in the girl’s case and was later lynched during ensuing violence.
Seven people have been arrested in connection with the lynching, bringing the total arrests related to the broader unrest to 42. The state government has filed three separate cases: the girl’s rape‑murder, the mob killing, and the larger communal violence that saw railway tracks and police vehicles vandalised.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Baruipur on July 12, provided the victim’s family a compensation cheque of ₹25 lakh, and offered a civic‑volunteer job to the victim’s elder brother. He declined to label the killing as a lynching, suggesting that political or communal forces rejected in recent elections may have instigated the unrest.
