The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is still investigating the July 5 retrieval of an 11‑year‑old girl's body from a pond in Surjyapur, Baruipur, South 24 Parganas. A post‑mortem indicated drowning, while later forensic statements said the child had been raped, strangled and placed in a sack while still alive before being dumped. The child disappeared after leaving home on July 4 to buy a birthday gift. Three original suspects – Ananda Sarkar, Dibakar Sardar and Pravas Mondal – remain in custody. A fourth, Prabhas Mondal, was seized by a mob, handed to police and shot dead in a custodial encounter on July 8. A 26‑year‑old local man, Indrajit Mondal, was lynched by the crowd after being wrongly suspected of involvement. The case ignited widespread unrest: road and railway blockades, tyre‑burnings, arson on police vehicles and damage to public property across Kolkata and surrounding districts. By July 10, police had arrested 35 individuals linked to both the mob violence and the murder investigation. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has reiterated a “zero‑tolerance” stance, ordered a 72‑hour report from DGP Siddhartha Gupta and pledged to seek capital punishment for the prime accused. He affirmed that the lynched man, Indrajit Mondal, was innocent and will receive justice. The state government amended the charge sheet to include offences under the POCSO law. Opposition parties and civil‑society groups highlighted the communal dimension – the victim was Muslim while the principal accused are Hindu – accusing the BJP‑led state government of failing to protect women and of allowing sectarian tensions to flare. The chief minister scheduled a return to the area to inaugurate a new police outpost, promising stricter action against instigators while investigations continue to identify any additional perpetrators.
