Sunda Strait search for missing journalists and crew ends

The joint search and rescue operation for eight people missing in the Sunda Strait has been officially terminated after 10 days. The group, which included five journalists and three crew members, lost contact on September 7, 2026, while traveling on the speedboat KM Arupadhatu I to cover the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.

Despite expanding the search area to 8,509 square nautical miles and deploying 523 personnel along with 24 vessels, authorities found no confirmed signs of the vessel or its passengers. While 13 floating objects were recovered during the operation, they were verified by police to be unrelated to the missing group.

Banten Governor Andra Soni announced the suspension of the operation, noting that it had become ineffective. However, officials stated that the search could be reopened if new leads or evidence emerge. Meanwhile, police are awaiting DNA results from a body found on Enggano Island to determine if it is connected to the incident.
