Basel Action Network warns of massive AI electronic waste surge
A new white paper titled ‘The Coming AI Waste Wave’ by the Basel Action Network (BAN) warns that the volume of electronic waste generated by the AI boom could be 40 to 60 times higher than previous academic estimates. By 2030, annual AI-driven e-waste could reach between 8.6 and 13.1 million tons. By 2050, the cumulative waste could fill approximately 23 million shipping containers, enough to circle the globe six times.
The report highlights that the bulk of data center waste does not come from GPUs or servers, which account for only 13% of the weight. Instead, cooling systems (35%), power and distribution components (34%), and batteries or emergency generators (15%) constitute the majority of the mass. The rapid replacement cycle—averaging 2.5 years—is driven by the pursuit of newer, faster hardware rather than equipment failure.
Beyond data centers, the report identifies a ‘contagion’ of e-waste caused by consumer hardware requirements. As AI-capable features become standard in PCs and smartphones, older devices are being retired prematurely. Currently, less than one-fifth of global e-waste is managed through responsible recycling, leading to risks of toxic heavy metal exposure in vulnerable communities.
