BASF reduces shifts at General Lagos industrial plant
BASF, the German chemical multinational, has announced a reduction in shifts at its production plant in General Lagos, located in the industrial corridor south of Rosario. Starting November 1, the facility will operate with three shifts instead of four, moving from a seven-day operation to a Monday-through-Saturday schedule.
The company described the move as an “optimization of its production model” intended to “strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of the dispersions and resins business in the long term.” BASF cited several contributing factors, including falling demand, local and regional overcapacity, price pressures, and high fixed costs. The company emphasized that the plant will not close and will remain a relevant part of its regional supply network.
The Rosario Chemical Workers Union has expressed significant concern, viewing the measure as a reduction in activity rather than mere optimization. Union leader Rubén Carroselli reported that the transition has already resulted in 13 fewer workers at the plant, characterizing the voluntary retirement offers as “disguised layoffs.” The union has declared a state of permanent assembly to defend labor rights and job security.
