BASF production and workforce reductions

BASF has implemented several measures to reduce costs and optimize its production models across different regions. In General Lagos, Argentina, the company announced it would reduce shifts at its production plant from four to three and move from a seven-day operation to a Monday-through-Saturday schedule starting November 1. BASF cited falling demand, regional overcapacity, and high fixed costs as reasons for this change. The Rosario Chemical Workers Union has criticized the move, with leader Rubén Carroselli characterizing voluntary retirement offers as “disguised layoffs.”

In Germany, BASF reported third-quarter revenue growth despite ongoing workforce reductions. In Ludwigshafen, reports indicate that between 3,600 and 4,200 jobs may be cut in 2026. While social partner agreements reportedly exclude operational redundancies in Ludwigshafen until the end of 2028, the company is utilizing natural attrition, early retirement, and voluntary severance packages. To increase productivity, BASF is implementing its CoreShift program, which utilizes artificial intelligence and harmonized processes to address challenges regarding raw material availability and international competitiveness.
