Scalea‑Maratea Airport Naming Announced by Italian Regional Presidents
Regional presidents Vito Bardi of Basilicata and Roberto Occhiuto of Calabria announced at the “La Ripartenza, liberi di pensare” event in Maratea that the planned airport at Scalea will be officially called “Scalea‑Maratea”. The designation is intended to give greater visibility to Basilicata and to promote the entire Alto Tirreno area as a single tourism destination.
The project, slated to begin operations in January 2027, will provide rapid connections to Rome and other cities using small and medium‑size aircraft as part of a regional air‑mobility network. Local officials, including Scalea mayor Mario Russo, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its potential to boost tourism, create economic opportunities and strengthen cooperation between the two neighbouring regions.
Both governors highlighted that the airport will serve as a catalyst for integrated development, aiming to overcome administrative borders and enhance the competitiveness of southern Italy’s tourism sector.
