Nicola Irto criticizes differentiated autonomy reform
Senator Nicola Irto of the Democratic Party has called for a suspension of agreements regarding differentiated autonomy, citing serious constitutional concerns. Irto argues that the Meloni government is prioritizing political agreements with the Lega party over national unity and the equality of citizens.
He highlighted that a dossier from the Chamber of Deputies raises fundamental questions regarding civil protection, professional services, and healthcare, particularly concerning agreements with the regions of Veneto, Lombardy, Piedmont, and Liguria. Irto emphasized that the reform risks deepening inequalities in Southern Italy, specifically in Calabria, where issues such as insufficient public services and healthcare migration are prevalent.
The senator urged Prime Minister Meloni to uphold the Constitution, noting that Article 5 establishes Italy as a single and indivisible Republic. He argued that the reform could permanently disadvantage the Mezzogiorno by granting excessive powers to wealthier northern regions without ensuring essential service levels for all Italians.
