Basilicata regional socio-economic challenges

The Basilicata region in Italy is facing significant socio-economic pressures involving demographic decline and energy resource management.

Sociological critiques have emerged regarding the region’s social infrastructure. Critics argue that initiatives like the Rural Living Labs within the Metaclustera Potenza act as “bureaucratic science fiction” that fails to combat structural desertification. While formal institutions such as banks and medical offices close, local bars are noted as the primary remaining hubs for community interaction. There are calls for the regional government to support these existing social hubs through tax incentives to preserve sociocultural presence.

Simultaneously, regional officials have expressed disappointment after the national government rejected proposals aimed at fuel wealth redistribution. Despite Basilicata producing roughly 85% of Italy’s extracted oil and over 30% of its national gas, local residents face high fuel costs. Rejected legislative amendments sought to grant the region a share of tax revenues from extractive companies and to establish a “Basilicata 2050 Fund” to mitigate fuel costs and support the regional production system.
