Basilicata to introduce 2.50 euro pharmaceutical co-payment

The regional government of Basilicata has approved a resolution introducing a 2.50 euro co-payment per prescription for conventional pharmaceutical spending. The measure aims to contain public spending, combat waste, and align the region with national expenditure ceilings.

To protect vulnerable populations, the regulation excludes several categories from the payment. Specifically, patients with chronic, disabling, or rare diseases will not pay for medications related to their conditions. Absolute protection is guaranteed for oncology patients, individuals in chronic pain therapy, and workplace accident victims. Total gratuity is also ensured for civil and war disabled persons.

The measure is scheduled to take effect on September 1, 2026, allowing time for pharmacies and IT systems to adapt. Health and Personal Policy Councilor Cosimo Latronico stated the move is a necessary effort requested by the Ministry of Health to ensure financial equilibrium and defend the provision of Essential Levels of Assistance.
