Basilicata's Prostate Cancer Screening Program Shows Early Success

Regional health assessor Cosimo Latronico said Basilicata is being cited as a model for prostate‑cancer screening after the region launched a free, organized program on 3 June 2025 for men aged 45‑70. The initiative, coordinated by the Regional Hospital Agency San Carlo in Potenza, was highlighted on Sky TG24 as a pilot for a national screening proposal.

One year into the programme, the Matera local health authority reported that 1,483 men participated between June 2025 and June 2026. Of those, 880 were found healthy, 148 were referred to urologists for further evaluation, and another 148 showed elevated PSA levels prompting specialist follow‑up. The report also noted 326 no‑shows and 123 cancelled appointments. Officials emphasised that early detection improves treatment chances and that the screening remains free and widely available across the province.
