Basque authorities commemorate historical leaders and diaspora legacy
The Basque Government recently held commemorations to honor the legacy of historical figures and the Basque diaspora. During the Day of the Diaspora, officials paid tribute to José Antonio Aguirre, the first Lehendakari, who led the first Basque Government and maintained Basque institutions, language, and culture during exile following the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent dictatorship.
Additionally, members of the EAJ-PNV commemorated the 90th anniversary of the death of Fortunato Agirre Lukin, the former mayor of Lizarra who was assassinated in 1936. The commemoration, held alongside his family and party members, highlighted his commitment to social justice, democracy, and human rights, framing his legacy as a model of political dialogue and integrity in the face of historical repression.
