Basque Government historical commemorations
Overview
The Basque Government has held several commemorative events to honor historical leaders and the legacy of the Basque diaspora.
In September, ceremonies were held in Donostia and Donibane Lohizun to mark the 130th anniversary of Jesús María de Leizaola’s birth and the 90th anniversary of the Basque Government. Leizaola, who led the government in exile from 1960 to 1979, was recognized for his commitment to democracy and human rights. During the Basque Diaspora Day, a tribute was paid to José Antonio Agirre, the first Lehendakari, which included an artificial intelligence simulation of a dialogue with Agirre regarding the survival of Basque language and culture.
In October, further commemorations focused on the diaspora and the preservation of Basque institutions during periods of exile following the Spanish Civil War. Additionally, members of the EAJ-PNV marked the 90th anniversary of the death of Fortunato Agirre Lukin, the former mayor of Lizarra assassinated in 1936, highlighting his legacy of political dialogue and social justice.
