Basque Country wins first official medals at World Basque Pelota Championship
The Basque Country has achieved a historic milestone by winning its first official medals while competing as an independent national selection at the XX World Basque Pelota Championship. The competition is currently being held in Argentina, with sub-venues in Uruguay.
In the women’s Cesta Punta category, the Basque team secured a silver medal after a closely contested final against Spain. The men’s Cesta Punta team earned the gold medal by defeating the United States in their final match.
Gorka Iturriaga, the Director of Physical Activity and Sport for the Basque Government, described the achievement as a “historic moment” with “extraordinary sporting and symbolic value.” He noted that these results demonstrate the potential of Basque selections and represent the culmination of years of effort and perseverance. The Basque Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring Basque athletes can compete under their own representation in international arenas.
