Basque Pilota team wins gold and silver at World Cup

Overview

The Basque National Team, Euskal Selekzioa, achieved a historic milestone at the XX World Championship in Argentina and Uruguay, winning its first official medals while competing as an independent national selection. This followed a statutory change by the International Federation of Basque Pelota (FIPV) allowing the team to debut.

In the men’s cesta punta category, the Basque team earned a gold medal by defeating the United States in the final. In the women’s cesta punta category, the team secured a silver medal following a closely contested final against Spain. Gorka Iturriaga, the Director of Physical Activity and Sport for the Basque Government, described the achievement as a “historic moment” with “extraordinary sporting and symbolic value.”

During the annual General Assembly held in Argentina, the FIPV announced it will move its central headquarters from Pamplona, Spain, to Buenos Aires, Argentina. The decision was reached via a 43 to 40 vote, selecting Buenos Aires over Biarritz, France. The federation cited economic and organizational reasons for leaving Pamplona, including a decrease in subsidies from the Pamplona City Council, the Government of Navarre, and the Higher Sports Council, alongside alleged political pressure. This move returns the federation to its founding location. Additionally, the assembly re-elected president Xavier Cazaubon, extending his mandate until 2030. The Spanish Pelota Federation (FEPelota) abstained from the voting.
