Basque Government grants semi-liberty to ETA prisoner José Juan García González
The Basque Government has granted semi-liberty to José Juan García González, a prisoner associated with the terrorist group ETA, by applying article 100.2 of the Penitentiary Regulations.
García González, also known as ‘Gogoan’ or ‘Atutxo’, was sentenced by the Audiencia Nacional in 2018 to 16 years in prison for an explosion at the Los Tamarises hotel in Getxo in 2003. He was previously detained in France in 2007 and convicted in 2011 for his role in ETA's logistics.
The Collective of Victims of Terrorism (Covite) has strongly criticized the move, labeling it ‘fraudulent’. Covite argues that the Basque Government is using this specific regulation as a shortcut to bypass the minimum sentence requirements necessary for a prisoner to reach the third degree of prison status. The association claims the decision lacks objective justification and fails to account for a lack of verifiable repentance or a definitive break from the terrorist organization.
