Basque Government launches thermal comfort plan for schools

The Basque Government's Department of Education has launched a pilot plan to adapt public schools to rising temperatures caused by climate change. Integrated into the 'Hezkuntza Eraiki 2030' infrastructure modernization strategy, the Thermal Comfort Plan aims to progressively improve school environments from early childhood through vocational training.

The plan involves conducting climate audits to assess building structures and surroundings. Proposed improvements include enhancing ventilation, creating shaded areas, 'renaturalizing' schoolyards, and establishing 'climate shelters.' While the department is open to installing air conditioning systems where technical conditions allow, current immediate actions focus on installing awnings as a provisional measure.

A pilot project is currently underway in several public schools in Bizkaia, including CEIP Bagatza HLHI in Barakaldo and IES Luis Briñas-Santutxu BHI, CPI Pagasarribide IPI, and CEIP Indautxu in Bilbao. These centers were selected following extreme heat episodes in June. The implementation will prioritize younger students due to their heightened vulnerability, with operational protocols developed for each center based on climate alerts and specific infrastructure needs.
