Climate adaptation measures in Spain
Overview
In response to extreme weather and rising temperatures, various regions are implementing climate adaptation measures. In Spain, municipal governments such as Sant Feliu de Llobregat and El Puerto de Santa María have prioritized installing air conditioning in public buildings, specifically schools, to protect the health and academic performance of students and teachers.
Building on these efforts, the Basque Government has launched a pilot ‘Thermal Comfort Plan’ as part of its ‘Hezkuntza Eraiki 2030’ modernization strategy. This initiative involves conducting climate audits to improve school environments through enhanced ventilation, shaded areas, and ‘climate shelters.’ While air conditioning is considered where technically feasible, immediate provisional measures include the installation of awnings. Pilot projects are currently active in several Bizkaia schools, including CEIP Bagatza HLHI and IES Luis Briñas-Santutxu BHI, following extreme heat episodes.
