Basque Government seeks migration competencies amid Ceuta crisis

The Basque Government is officially requesting increased competencies regarding migration management. Nerea Melgosa, the Basque Minister for Welfare, Youth, and Demographic Challenge, announced that a meeting is scheduled for September 3 with Spain’s Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, Elma Saiz.

Melgosa argued that the Basque Country must act as a ‘northern border’ and requires specific migration tools that were not addressed in the 1979 Statute of Gernika. The request follows recent migration crises in Ceuta and Irun. The Basque administration expressed that the Spanish state and Europe have been slow to respond to these challenges.

In Vitoria-Gasteiz, the PP (People's Party) has called for a public demonstration on September 2 to show solidarity with Ceuta. The protest, organized in alignment with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), aims to support the citizens of Ceuta amidst the ongoing migration situation.
