Basque Pelota World Championship debuts Basque Selection in Argentina

The Basque Pelota World Championship is set to begin in Argentina and Uruguay, marking a historic milestone as the Basque Selection (Euskal Selekzioa) competes officially under its own representation for the first time. The Basque delegation consists of 60 members, including 40 players and 20 technical staff, led by Basque Pelota Federation President Jose Mari Mitxelena.

During an official reception in Buenos Aires at the Centro Vasco Laurak Bat, Ibone Bengoetxea, the Basque Minister of Culture and Language Policy, highlighted the political and social significance of the event, noting it represents a collective aspiration for international recognition. While the Basque Selection is currently in a four-year transitional membership period with the international federation, officials expressed confidence in their ability to compete at a high level.

Simultaneously, the Spanish national team is preparing for the tournament with the goal of securing medals. Javier Conde, President of the Spanish Basque Pelota Federation, noted that the expedition faces significant logistical and economic challenges, including reduced subsidies from the Higher Sports Council and the high costs associated with traveling to South America.
