Bavaria increases subsidies to combat bark beetle infestations

The Bavarian state government has more than doubled financial subsidies to assist forest owners in combating bark beetle infestations. The expanded support package, limited to 2019, provides up to 12 euros per cubic meter to protect larch, fir, pine, and oak trees from bark-breeding insects.

This initiative follows long-standing advocacy by the Bavarian Farmers' Association (BBV) in response to extreme weather and droughts that have threatened entire forests. The measures aim to mitigate the impact of climate change on agriculture and forestry sectors.

Broader ecological concerns persist across Germany, including record heatwaves, forest fires from Greece to the Eifel region, and melting Alpine glaciers. Scientific research, such as findings from the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology, suggests that current climate-related crises may be precursors to even more significant environmental catastrophes.
