Bavaria launches Dementia Week amid rising case projections
The seventh Bavarian Dementia Week has commenced, running from September 18 to September 27. Bavarian Health Minister Judith Gerlach emphasized the importance of social inclusion for those living with dementia, stating that they “belong in the middle of our society.”
The initiative aims to raise awareness regarding the challenges faced by patients and their caregivers while demonstrating how dementia-sensitive structures can be integrated into daily life. The program includes a wide range of activities, such as lectures, workshops, and community events, with over 2,400 registrations reported, marking a new record for the event.
Health officials warn of a significant rise in dementia cases due to demographic shifts. Current estimates suggest approximately 270,000 people in Bavaria are living with dementia. Projections indicate this number could reach 300,000 by 2030 and potentially 380,000 by 2040. The Dementia Week is a component of the broader Bavarian Dementia Strategy, which was established by the state government in 2013.
