Dementia awareness initiatives in Germany and Austria
Overview
Regional initiatives in Germany and Austria are implementing various educational programs and community events to observe Dementia Awareness Week and World Alzheimer’s Day in September 2026.
In Germany, the Bavarian Dementia Week continues with expanded programming in the Roth district from September 15 to October 6. This schedule includes lectures, film afternoons, singing sessions, museum tours, and workshops focused on self-care and fire safety. District Administrator Ben Schwarz has emphasized the necessity of community exchange and encouraged those affected to seek assistance. Other Bavarian programs include the 7th Bavarian Dementia Week in Erlangen, Herzogenaurach, and Eckental, a ‘Market of Possibilities’ in Höchstädt, and the ‘Demenz neu sehen’ photography exhibition in Bad Neustadt. Efforts in Ansbach and Straubing-Bogen focus on medical aspects, safety, and fraud protection.
In the Westerwald district, the first joint dementia action week is being held from September 21 to 27. Centered around World Alzheimer’s Day, this collaborative effort involves multiple regional networks and the Westerwald Senior Citizens' Coordination Office, aiming to break taboos through lectures and readings.
Other German regions include the fifth Dementia Weeks in Hannover (September 21 to October 9), Wangen im Allgäu, and the ‘Dementia Action Days’ in Kaiserslautern. In Austria, the MAS Alzheimerhilfe in Linz will host a reading titled ‘Die Akte Auguste D.’ to educate the public about the condition, which affects approximately 170,000 people in the country. The overarching theme, “Dementia – (not) a question of age,” highlights that the condition affects younger individuals and their social circles as well as those over 65.
