Bavaria launches European tender for Munich S-Bahn operations

The Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BEG) has launched a European-wide tender process to select the operator for the Munich S-Bahn network for the period between December 2034 and December 2041. The selection process is expected to conclude in 2029.

A major component of the new contract is a massive fleet modernization. Bavaria is investing over 2 billion euros to introduce 90 Siemens Mobility ET 1420 XXL trains. These 202-meter-long vehicles are designed to increase capacity and are expected to begin entering service as early as late 2028.

The contract initially covers approximately 23.7 million train-kilometers per year, a figure set to rise following the completion of the second main line (2. Stammstrecke) in the mid-2030s. Planned structural changes to the network include the electrification and integration of the Ebersberg to Wasserburg route, as well as a swap of the eastern branches for the S2 and S3 lines to optimize passenger flow.
