Munich S-Bahn operational and infrastructure planning
Overview
The Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BEG) has initiated a European-wide tender to select an operator for the Munich S-Bahn network for the period between December 2034 and December 2041. The selection process is anticipated to conclude in 2029, with the current operator, DB Regio, expected to compete for the contract.
A central element of this transition is a fleet modernization plan involving an investment of over 2 billion euros to introduce 90 Siemens Mobility ET 1420 XXL trains. These 202-meter-long vehicles are intended to increase capacity and may enter service as early as late 2028.
Future network improvements include the electrification of the Ebersberg to Wasserburg route and a reconfiguration of the S2 and S3 lines. Service expansion is linked to the completion of the second main line (2. Stammstrecke) in the mid-2030s. Additionally, the Bavarian SPD has urged Deutsche Bahn to finish major construction at Munich Central Station by 2036 to prepare for the Olympic Games.
