Bavarian care recipients receive insufficient preventive dental care
Health insurance provider Barmer has reported a significant gap in preventive dental care for care recipients in Bavaria, Germany. According to recent 2024 data, less than one third of care recipients living in nursing homes have received specialized preventive dental examinations.
The situation is even more acute for those receiving care at home, where only 2.4 percent of individuals received such preventive check-ups. Barmer warns that poor oral health, including gum inflammation and ill-fitting dentures, can lead to severe consequences such as malnutrition, weight loss, and general weakness due to difficulties in chewing and swallowing.
While general dental contact has seen a slight increase—rising from 46 percent to over 50 percent for those in nursing homes since 2018—this figure includes all dental visits, such as tooth extractions or denture repairs, rather than specifically focusing on preventive care and oral health planning.
