Elderly care and health challenges in Bavaria

Health and demographic challenges facing elderly care in Bavaria continue to evolve. While previous data from Barmer highlighted a significant gap in preventive dental care for care recipients—noting that less than one third of nursing home residents and only 2.4 percent of home-care recipients received specialized examinations—the focus has expanded to include broader public health trends and caregiver support.

Regarding dementia, AOK Bayern corroborates that while the individual risk of developing the condition is decreasing, the total number of affected people in Bavaria is rising due to increased life expectancy. Projections suggest the number of dementia patients in the state will reach 380,000 by 2040. In response to these demographic shifts, the University of Jena has launched the ‘AnDem-RoSe’ research project to study support systems for family caregivers who face the psychological burdens of dementia care.

To address these shifts, the healthcare sector is exploring technological solutions, such as the potential use of assistive, monitoring, and social robots to alleviate a nursing staff shortage that could reach a deficit of 250,000 by 2040.

In other public health developments within Bavaria, measles infection rates have dropped significantly, with only six cases reported so far this year compared to 40 during the same period last year. Health Minister Judith Gerlach attributed this decline to consistent vaccination efforts, though she noted that second-dose vaccination rates for toddlers remain low.
