Bavarian forest fires and regional blazes strain emergency services

Heat and drought have driven a surge of forest fires across Bavaria, Austria and Croatia. In Bavaria, fires near Freudenberg in the Amberg‑Sulzbach district, on the Johannisberg, and in the Chiemgauer Alps have required more than 2,300 responders, including firefighters, the Bavarian Red Cross, mountain rescue and the Technical Relief Agency. Seven firefighters were lightly injured, and road AS 29 remains closed. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann thanked the crews and highlighted the use of police H145 helicopters, drones with thermal imaging and hand‑clearing of lingering hot spots.

In Austria’s Styria, lightning‑triggered blazes at Pernegg and the Guglzipf area near Berndorf mobilised about 140 firefighters, two police helicopters and a Bundesheer helicopter. The fires were contained within hours, with crews using small‑scale extinguishers and heat‑sensing cameras.

Further south, Croatia’s Istrian peninsula faced simultaneous grass and forest fires near Oprtalj and Orihi. Twenty‑three firefighters, local volunteer units and two Canadair aircraft were deployed to protect roughly 10 ha of vegetation.

Across the region, authorities have warned of continued high fire danger, urging the public to avoid discarding cigarettes and to report any smoke promptly.
