Intensified fires across Germany, Austria and Europe

Entities: Mannheim · German police · Mannheim Fire Department · Friesenheimer Island · BASF

Overview

The 2026 fire season in Germany and Austria is exceptionally severe. By late July satellite data show over 254,000 ha burned and 1,254 large fires, roughly double the normal rate. Bavaria’s volunteer network – about 7,500 stations – remains on high alert with tractors, specialist vehicles and helicopters, while the SPD pushes for a dedicated special unit.

July incidents illustrate the expanding response: a 5.5‑ha field fire in Cologne injured one person; fires in Backnang, near Winnenden and at a Weiherhammer recycling plant involved dozens of firefighters and caused minor injuries; a five‑hectare forest fire in St Wendel required over 500 firefighters but no evacuations. Investigations in Nonnweiler and Oppenau focus on possible illegal fireworks.

The surge is part of a broader European wildfire crisis, with France and Spain also reporting record burned areas and seeking EU disaster relief. Bavarian officials call for lighter gear, terrain‑capable vehicles and a new special unit; plans include a fire‑station complex in Mosbach and further investment. Baden‑Württemberg offered two police helicopters, each with a 900‑liter water tank, to aid French firefighting.

On 26 July a vegetation fire on Friesenheimer Island in Mannheim’s industrial harbour spread across about 30 ha under strong winds. Around 150 firefighters, including the BASF plant brigade, police and rescue services, contained the blaze and protected nearby facilities; no injuries were reported, and the cause is suspected pyrotechnic activity.

Cross‑border assistance continues, with multiple brigades tackling simultaneous blazes in Austria, Germany and France. Authorities warn that heavy summer rain on dried soils could trigger flooding, underscoring the need for sustained readiness and coordination.
