Intensifying wildfires and heat crises across Europe
Overview
The 2026 fire season has intensified across Europe, driven by extreme heat and drought. In Germany, forest fires have been reported in the Main-Kinzig district, where authorities are investigating potential arson, and in Saxony, where Mayor Steffen Zenner described a fire in the ‘Schwarzes Holz’ area as the region’s largest in 30 years. The Hürtgenwald fire in the Eifel region continues to cause significant displacement, with at least 1,800 people evacuated. Investigations are also focusing on a wildfire near Reichenbach that destroyed 21 hectares of land, with authorities looking into potential negligent arson involving an unauthorized rally car test drive.
Recent incidents in Germany include a hedge fire in Annaberg-Buchholz and a barn fire in Waldmühlen that spread to a residential building. In Saarland, a forest and field fire near Eppelborn burned approximately 1.5 hectares; over 100 responders were deployed, and two firefighters sustained injuries from smoke gases.
In Austria, forest fires have increased by nearly 50 percent compared to last year. Recent activity includes a forest fire near Dürnstein and a vegetation fire in Zettenreith. Expanding the scope of relief, 50 firefighters from Lower Austria were deployed to Sardinia under the EU Prepositioning Project to assist with vegetation fires in temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius.
In Switzerland, extreme heat has caused significant stress on beech trees. The crisis has also impacted water security; in parts of Bavaria, municipalities have resorted to delivering drinking water via milk tankers. Wildfires have expanded into Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, with evacuations reported in France, Greece, and Croatia.
