Bavarian forests suffer from heat stress and premature leaf loss

Extreme heat and drought during the summer have left significant marks on forests in Bavaria, Germany. Forestry experts report that many trees are shedding their leaves prematurely, creating the appearance of an early autumn.

Christian Kaul, Managing Director of the Bavarian Forest Owners Association, and Nathalie Kolb, a forester with the Bavarian State Forests, explain that this premature leaf loss occurs for two primary reasons. First, trees may enter a protective “emergency mode,” pulling essential nutrients from the leaves back into the shoots before shedding them. Second, intense and prolonged solar radiation can cause leaf burns, leading to death and subsequent loss without the tree having the chance to properly redistribute nutrients.

The consequences for forest health are serious. The loss of leaves prevents photosynthesis, which halts growth. In young trees, this primarily affects height growth, while in older trees, it impacts the diameter of the trunk. Experts warn that leaves lost due to sun damage can cause irreversible damage, weakening the trees and slowing their long-term recovery.
