In Thuringia, the number of forest fires recorded between March and August 2026 reached 47, exceeding the historical average of 28. While the total area burned is lower than in previous years, the frequency of incidents remains high. Climate change is significantly impacting tree vitality; for example, spruce populations in certain areas decreased from 38 percent to 31 percent between 2012 and 2022. Experts warn that multi-year drought phases prevent forest recovery even during rainy years. Additionally, drought-stressed trees are increasingly prone to instability, leading experts to advise hikers to watch for falling branches.
