Bavarian Leader Ilse Aigner Visits Bosnia, Honors Srebrenica Victims

On a three‑day visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bavarian Landtag President Ilse Aigner (CSU) paid tribute to the more than 8,000 victims of the July 1995 Srebrenica massacre. Together with the Landtag presidium she visited the Srebrenica memorial, laid a wreath, and spoke with site director Emir Suljagic and Munira Subasic, president of the Mothers of Srebrenica association.

The delegation then met Bosnian President Denis Becirovic in Sarajevo, where Aigner highlighted Bosnia’s EU accession aspirations, NATO‑partnership goals and the pressure from Russia and China. Earlier in the trip she discussed the situation with former High Representative Christian Schmidt, who stepped down in July 2024 after U.S. pressure. Bosnia has been an EU candidate since 2022, and the European Council in 2024 opened formal accession negotiations, pending reforms in democracy, rule of law and anti‑corruption.
